To start the celebration of Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, 2018, on St. Thomas, the firefighters of the Virgin Islands Fire Service worshipped at the Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sabbath, October 6, 2018.
This year, the observance is particularly poignant as comrades remember firefighters, Gregory “Benson” Louis and Dwayne “Yogi” Thomas, who both tragically died while on duty. The church opened its doors to family members, friends and the community as many sought to pay tribute to their memories.

Gregory “Benson” Louis, who was slain at his post more than 2 years ago, had been a member of the Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church on St. Thomas. His mother, Sister Marie Louis, and brother, Warren who is also a firefighter, were on hand to receive a floral arrangement from the fire department.
A message to the congregation, from Sister Dorene Browne Louis, Benson’s widow, was read by First Elder Desmond Smith. Her message shared that their son, Adonte, is now a member of the Hyattsville Fire Department, following in the footsteps of his dad.
A Prayer of Consolation was given by Pastor Noel James for the families and the fire department.
